“The Hidden Meanings of Renaissance Art”. An illustrated talk by Dr Michael Cefai

Renaissance art is rich not only in terms of beauty, aesthetics and technique but also in terms of the colours and the symbolism that it carries, portraying an insightful visual language, which at times is intriguing and even open to vast interpretation. This talk will take a look at the hidden meanings of Renaissance Art and the artists behind them.

Gelato Italiano talk and taste - a demonstration by Francesco Arcadio.

Francesco and Kirsten, owners of the Italian Gelateria in Loughborough, will help us to discover how real “gelato” is made, the history and the  passion behind the popular dessert. The talk include making and tasting 2 gelato flavours, and a cappuccino / tea / non alcoholic cold drink.

It would be so lovely to see you all at our 1st event of the year, celebrating the start of a new and exciting year the Italian way, with a FREE Glass of Prosecco and a delicious buffet. After our food and drink we will have some fun with our well prepared Italian quiz and a great prize will go to the winning team.  A very small amount of time will be given to our AGM, usually no more than ten minutes.   Also on the night there will be an opportunity for our members to help us decide which charity to sponsor in 2017.    Don’t miss out on this great evening, we really want you to be there!

As part of the 750 anniversary of Dante's birth, join us to celebrate "il sommo poeta" by exploring the land where Dante Alighieri and found the inspiration for his work.

David Lamb will transport us to the heart of Rome - down through the levels of the
ancient Church of San Clemente - all the way to the first Roman temple dedicated to the God Mithras.

Giuseppe Tornatore – Screening Italy’s Past and Present - An illustrated talk by Prof. William Hope.
 
Films by the Oscar-winning director Giuseppe Tornatore are well known for their opulent cinematography and their lush musical scores by Ennio Morricone; examples include Cinema Paradiso (1988) and Malena (2000), which launched Monica Bellucci’s film career. Much of Tornatore’s work has reflected on the changing face of Italian society from the post-war period onwards, and this presentation will discuss how Tornatore’s films go beyond mere nostalgia to explore a range of issues that continue to affect communities and individuals. The presentation will be accompanied by sequences from key films and by audio recordings (visual translations provided) made during an exclusive interview conducted with the director, during which he reflects on the social implications of his work.

The Science of Leonardo da Vinci and the Secrets of the Vitruvian Man - An illustrated talk by Prof. Leno Mascia.
The scientific work of Leonardo will be discussed with illustrations from different areas, placing particularly emphasis on the geometric features of the Vitruvian man to demonstrate his unique ability in embedding scientific concept in art.

Design Threads: Stitching together the past, present and future of Design, in Italy, UK and beyond - An illustrated talk by Phd student Francesco Mazzarella.This talk will focus on the meaning of design, providing an overview of the history of Made in Italy, contemporary design for austerity and opening up cutting-edge design frontiers towards sustainability and social innovation. Beyond Italy, Francesco will share his international experiences, uniting the knots of the design landscape worldwide, to finally zoom into textile artisanship in East Midlands, through an interactive activity, rescuing local heritage.
Francesco, from Sicily (Italy) lives and works in Loughborough as PhD researcher at Loughborough Design School. He has a BSc in Industrial Design and MSc in Ecodesign at Politecnico di Torino (Italy), with international study experiences (in the Netherlands, Brazil and Hungary). He has worked as graphic designer and project manager, and is a tireless volunteer to promote emergent designs. His PhD research explores how service design can strategically contribute to drive textile artisans’ communities towards a sustainable future.

The Universal Appeal of Neapolitan Music – an illustrated talk by Rose O’ Toole
From car and ice cream adverts to Elvis Presley, from the three tenors to film sound tracks, from pop million sellers to Jimmy Durante, the music of this city is popular the world over.
We guarantee that you will recognise at least some of the tunes.
We would very much encourage you to sing along, dance or ‘La’, so long as you feel the soul of the city.

From fabulous divas and ripped musclemen to exciting newsreels and Dante films, Italian silent cinema is a thrilling yet largely unknown world. Join us for an illustrated talk as we have a look at this fascinating period in Italy's film history, and look at a selection of the leading films and directors of the period.

Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598 - 1680) - Architect, painter and the greatest scene designer and image-maker of his age. An illustrated talk by Dr Michael Cefai.
An illustrated talk on Bernini's sublime theatrical works of art, which give Baroque Rome its character. Bernini's works tend to supercede the limits of sculpture, they dialogue with their architectural and urban  space, and interpret the trend of the Baroque period as the fusion of all Art.

Anna Franchi: A talk by Professor Sharon Wood, lecturer and author.
Anna Franchi was an early 20th century Italian writer, passionate about the feminist issues of the time, particularly female inequality in matters of divorce and faithfulness in marriage ~ and Italian politicians who ignored it! 
Should make for an interesting evening..
